		<title>Well-balanced nominations for the International Gold Cup</title>

		<description><![CDATA[<p>Twelve well-matched timber horses have been nominated to the 75th anniversary running of the $50,000 International Gold Cup, the feature race of the International Gold Cup meet at Great Meadow Race Course in The Plains on Saturday, Oct. 20. First post time for the 29th annual International Gold Cup meet is 1:30 p.m.</p>
<p>Middleburg-based trainer Doug Fout nominated Alfred C. Griffin Jr.&rsquo;s Aero, who would be seeking to improve on a second-place finish in the 2011 International Gold Cup, a 3 1/2-mile race over timber fences.</p>
<p>He most recently finished fourth in the $35,000 National Sporting Library Chronicle Cup at the Virginia Fall Races in Middleburg on Oct. 6. In his previous start on the Great Meadow course, Aero finished fifth in the Virginia Gold Cup on May 5.</p>
<p>Nominated to the International Gold Cup from a good second-place finish in the Chronicle Cup was Michael T. Wharton&rsquo;s Grinding Speed, who also was second in the $15,000 Legacy Chase at Maryland&rsquo;s Shawan Downs on Sept. 29. Alicia Murphy trains the six-year-old Grindstone gelding.</p>
<p>The Chronicle Cup&rsquo;s third-place finisher, Joseph W. Henderson&rsquo;s Triple Dip, also was nominated to the International Gold Cup. Trained in Virginia by Jimmy Day, Triple Dip pulled a major upset when he won the 2011 Mason Houghland Memorial in his first career start over timber fences.Owner-trainer Karen Gray nominated Hot Rize, who finished sixth in the Chronicle Cup.</p>
<p>Preparing for the International Gold Cup in the $25,000 Genesee Valley Hunt Cup on Oct. 13 are nominees Mecklenburg and Won Wild Bird. Rosbrian Farm&rsquo;s Mecklenburg finished a good second in this year&rsquo;s Mason Houghland Memorial at Nashville&rsquo;s Iroquois Steeplechase for trainer Tara Elmore.</p>
<p>Wally Pinkard&rsquo;s Won Wild Bird, trained by Regina Welsh, finished fifth in the Radnor Hunt Cup at Malvern, Pa., on May 19. The ten-year-old Wild Wonder mare had won the Radnor timber race in 2011.</p>
<p>Trainer Julie Gomena nominated Margaret C. Littleton&rsquo;s Atrium, who finished sixth in the Mason Houghland Memorial on May 12. Nominated from the Radnor Hunt Cup was ninth-place finisher Monte Bianco, an Irish-bred owned and trained by Jack Fisher. Monte Bianco won the 2008 Radnor Hunt Cup.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[<p>The winners of this year's Virginia Gold Cup, Radnor Hunt Cup, and National Sporting Library Chronicle Cup are among ten nominees for the $50,000 International Gold Cup, the featured event of the 28th annual International Gold Cup meet at Great Meadow Race Course in The Plains on Saturday, Oct. 15. Also nominated for the 3 1/2-mile timber race was the defending International Gold Cup winner, He's a Conniver.</p>
<p>Merriefield Farm's Bon Caddo won the Virginia Gold Cup by 13 lengths on May 7 but then finished sixth in the Radnor Hunt Cup two weeks later. The Pennsylvania race was won by Pin Ribbon Racing's Won Wild Bird, who is among the International Gold Cup nominees. </p>
<p>The National Sporting Library Chronicle Cup at the Virginia Fall Races may prove to be a key race for the International Gold Cup. Among the nominees are the first five finishers from the timber race in Middleburg on Oct. 1. Alfred C. Griffin Jr.'s Aero took over at the final fence and won by six lengths over Magalen O. Bryant's G'Day G'Day. Both are trained by Middleburg-based trainer Doug Fout. </p>
<p>EMO's He's a Conniver finished third, two lengths behind G'Day G'Day, and gave some indication that he is returning to the form that propelled him to an International Gold Cup victory last fall. </p>

First post time is 1:30 p.m. at Great Meadow Race Course in The Plains, Va., for the six-race program, which drew crowded fields.</p>
<p>Merriefield Farm's Bon Caddo will be attempting to lock up a National Steeplechase Association timber championship in the 3 1/2-mile International Gold Cup. Trained by Dawn Williams, the ten-year-old Bon Point gelding scored a sparkling 13-length victory in the Virginia Gold Cup on May 7 over the Great Meadow course, but then was a disappointing sixth in the Radnor Hunt Cup two weeks later in Malvern, Pa. Bon Caddo, who leads the annual timber-racing standings with $67,200 in purse earnings, will be ridden by Jody Petty.</p>
<p>Pink Ribbon Racing's Won Wild Bird scored an upset in the Radnor Hunt Cup after falling in the Maryland Hunt Cup and refusing to start in the Virginia Gold Cup's Steeplethon. Trainer Regina Welsh named Carl Rafter to ride the nine-year-old Wild Wonder gelding, who is third in the timber point standings with $33,000.</p>
<p>Alfred C. Griffin Jr.'s Aero marked himself as a horse to watch with a dynamic six-length victory in the National Sporting Library Chronicle Cup at the Virginia Fall Races in Middleburg on Oct. 1 under Jeff Murphy. Trained by Doug Fout, the six-year-old Northern Spur gelding had won his maiden timber victory at the Willowbrook Steeplechase in Kennett Square, Pa., on May 15. Middleburg-based Fout also entered Magalen O. Bryant's homebred G'Day G'Day, who finished second in the Chronicle Cup and will again be ridden by leading jockey Paddy Young. <br />
Also in the International Gold Cup field is the defending winner, He's a Conniver, owned by Ernie Oare's EMO Stable. The nine-year-old Crafty Friend gelding, looking for his first victory since his 2010 win at Great Meadow, most recently finished third to Aero in the Chronicle Cup. Trainer Dale Jackson named Bernie Dalton to ride.</p>
<p>Also entering the International Gold Cup from the Chronicle Cup are Manown Kisor Jr.'s Gather No Moss and Robert A. Kinsley's Incomplete, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.<br />
